Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and with its population of about 450,000, the country’s largest city. Bratislava is situalted in the South-Western Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries.

Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament and the Slovak Executive. It is home to several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions. Many of Slovakia’s large businesses and financial institutions also have headquarters there.

The history of the city has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions, namely by Austrians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs and Slovaks (in alphabetical order). The city was the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy and coronation town from 1536 to 1783.

Bratislava offers a variety of activities to any visitor. While visiting the city, its historical parts will reveal pictoresque alleys full of various cafés, restaurants, stores and cultural spots that express the variety of Bratislava. As a past home to Celts, Romans, Hungarians, Germans, Jews and Slovaks and a current home to Slovaks from different parts of the country, as well as residents from all over the world, Bratislava offers an impressive range of architecture, languages and cuisine.

The most important dominants are Bratislava castle, Devin castle, St. Martin’s Cathedral, Academia Istropolitana, The Old Town Hall, Michael`s Gate, Franciscans church, Blue church, Slovak national theatre, Primacial palace etc.
