Pri napĺňaní cieľov získať vedúcu pozíciu v cenovo dostupných a udržateľných energetických technológiách sa Európska únia zameria na využívanie energie z obnoviteľných zdrojov a na energetické úspory vrátane hľadania prelomových technológií. Kľúčové je znižovanie emisií skleníkových plynov, zachytávanie uhlíka, jeho následné uskladnenie a prípadné ďalšie využitie. Pri narastajúcom využití obnoviteľných zdrojov energie a vyššom podiele elektrickej energie v energetickom mixe bude treba riešiť flexibilitu výroby, skladovanie energie a využívanie synergií medzi rôznymi sieťami. Destinácia 3 zahŕňa aktivity zamerané na podporu udržateľných, bezpečných a konkurencieschopných dodávok energie.
