  • Description of the expertise offered
Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding (DGPB) offers unique networking of genetic research, genetic technologies and exploration of the genetic resources of plants to be used in food processing and industry. DGPB applies the methods of molecular biology for mapping the plants´ genome in plant gene pool collections and for protection and use of agrobiodiversity. Gene pool evaluation is aimed at creation of the image database for purposes of computer network and detection of biodiversity using the methods of molecular genetics. Research focuses also on practical use of underground mushrooms. DGPB develops biometrics and statistics methods for analysis of the plant biodiversity and creates specialised databases for educational and research purposes. DGPB plays an important role in the field of: plant agrobiodiversity´s use and protection; diversity of fungi and the importance of unstable genome positions for agrobiodiversity.

  • Description of the organisation
Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding DGPB (Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra) is focused on education and research in the field of genetics; breeding; seed breeding, gene pool protection; plant genetic technologies; biosecurity; ICT in agrobiology and field experimentation. Research activities are aimed mainly at genetic analysis and evaluation and use of the biodiversity in agroecosystem. DGPB provides vocational training of experts active in seed breeding organisations, agricultural organisations and public administration. DGPB provides also advisory and expert services for the Ministry of Environment in the field of biosecurity and actively participates in the implementation of the National programme for protection of genetic sources of plants for nutrition and agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development). Along with establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Protection and Use of Agrobiodiversity (within the Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources of SUA), the potential for extension of research in related fields has significantly increased.
