Medzinárodná spolupráca vo vede a výskume

Európska charta a kódex pre výskumných pracovníkov

V roku 2005 Európska komisia prijala Európsku chartu pre výskumných pracovníkov a Kódex správania pre nábor výskumných pracovníkov. Tieto dva dokumenty adresované výskumníkom, ako aj výskumným zamestnávateľom a financujúcim subjektom vo verejnom aj súkromnom sektore sú kľúčovými prvkami politiky EÚ na podporu kariéry výskumných pracovníkov. Podpora kariér výskumníkov v Európe je roztrieštená na miestnej, regionálnej, národnej alebo odvetvovej úrovni a neumožňuje Európe čo najlepšie využiť jej vedecký potenciál. Charta a kódex zabezpečujú, že výskumníci môžu mať rovnaké práva a povinnosti v ktorejkoľvek európskej krajine.

 

Európska charta výskumných pracovníkov je súbor všeobecných zásad a požiadaviek, ktoré špecifikujú úlohy, zodpovednosti a nároky výskumných pracovníkov, ako aj zamestnávateľov a / alebo financujúcich pracovníkov výskumných pracovníkov. Aplikácia do praxe je zodpovednosťou zamestnávateľov, financujúcich organizácií a výskumníkov samotných.

 

Cieľom charty je zabezpečiť, aby povaha vzťahu medzi výskumníkmi a zamestnávateľmi alebo financujúcimi organizáciami prispievala k úspešnému výkonu v oblasti vytvárania, prenosu, zdieľania a šírenia poznatkov a technologického rozvoja a kariérneho rozvoja výskumných pracovníkov. Charta tiež uznáva hodnotu všetkých foriem mobility ako prostriedku na posilnenie profesionálneho rozvoja výskumných pracovníkov. V tomto zmysle charta predstavuje rámec pre výskumných pracovníkov, zamestnávateľov a financujúcich pracovníkov, ktorí ich vyzývajú, aby konali zodpovedne a profesionálne vo svojom pracovnom prostredí, a aby sa navzájom uznávali ako také. Charta sa zaoberá všetkými výskumníkmi v Európskej únii vo všetkých fázach svojej kariéry a pokrýva všetky oblasti výskumu vo verejnom a súkromnom sektore bez ohľadu na povahu menovania alebo zamestnania, právne postavenie svojho zamestnávateľa alebo typ organizácie alebo v ktorom sa práca vykonáva. Zohľadňuje viacero úloh výskumníkov, ktorí sú určení nielen na vykonávanie výskumu a / alebo na realizáciu rozvojových aktivít, ale aj na dohľad, mentoring, riadenie alebo administratívne úlohy.

Všeobecné pravidlá a požiadavky pre otvorený trh pre výskumníkov delíme na dve skupiny.

1. Pravidlá vzťahujúce sa na výskumníkov

Sloboda výskumu

Výskumní pracovníci by mali sústrediť svoj výskum na dobro ľudstva a rozširovať hranice vedeckých poznatkov, pričom by mali slobodu myslenia a prejavu a slobodu určovať metódy, ktorými sa riešia problémy podľa uznávaných etických zásad a praktík. Výskumní pracovníci by však mali uznať obmedzenia tejto slobody, ktoré by mohli vzniknúť v dôsledku konkrétnych výskumných okolností (vrátane dohľadu / usmernenia / riadenia) alebo prevádzkových obmedzení, napr. z rozpočtových dôvodov alebo z dôvodov infraštruktúry, alebo najmä v priemyselnom sektore z dôvodu ochrany duševného vlastníctva. Etické princípy

Výskumní pracovníci by mali dodržiavať uznávané etické postupy a základné etické princípy, ktoré zodpovedajú ich disciplíne, ako aj etickým štandardom, ako sa dokumentuje v rôznych národných, sektorových alebo inštitucionálnych etických kódexoch.

Profesionálna zodpovednosť

 Výskumní pracovníci by mali vyvinúť maximálne úsilie, aby zabezpečili, že ich výskum bude pre spoločnosť dôležitý a nebude duplikovať výskum, ktorý sa predtým uskutočnil inde. Musia sa vyhýbať plagiátorstvu akéhokoľvek druhu a dodržiavať zásadu duševného vlastníctva a spoločného vlastníctva údajov v prípade výskumu vykonávaného v spolupráci s nadriadeným a / alebo inými výskumnými pracovníkmi. To zahŕňa predpisy o právach duševného vlastníctva a požiadavky a podmienky akéhokoľvek sponzora alebo donorov, nezávisle od povahy ich zmluvy. Výskumní pracovníci by mali dodržiavať takéto predpisy tým, že poskytnú požadované výsledky (napr. Diplomové práce, publikácie, patenty, správy, vývoj nových produktov atď.), Ako sú uvedené v zmluvných podmienkach alebo v rovnocennom dokumente.

Zodpovednosť

Metódy zhromažďovania a analýzy, výstupy a prípadne údaje o údajoch by mali byť vždy, keď je to potrebné a podľa požiadaviek príslušných orgánov, otvorené vnútornej a vonkajšej kontrole.

Osvedčené postupy vo výskume

Výskumní pracovníci by mali vždy prijať bezpečné pracovné postupy v súlade s vnútroštátnymi právnymi predpismi vrátane prijatia potrebných bezpečnostných opatrení na ochranu zdravia a bezpečnosti a na obnovu po katastrofách v oblasti informačných technológií, napr. prípravou správnych záložných stratégií. Mali by byť tiež oboznámení so súčasnými vnútroštátnymi právnymi požiadavkami týkajúcimi sa požiadaviek na ochranu údajov a ochranu dôvernosti a mali by podniknúť potrebné kroky na ich neustále plnenie.

Šírenie, využívanie výsledkov

Vzťah s nadriadenými

Tieto úlohy by mali vykonávať podľa najvyšších odborných štandardov. Pokiaľ ide o ich úlohu supervízorov alebo mentorov výskumných pracovníkov, vedúci výskumní pracovníci by mali vybudovať konštruktívny a pozitívny vzťah s výskumníkmi v počiatočnom štádiu s cieľom vytvoriť podmienky pre efektívny prenos vedomostí a pre ďalší úspešný rozvoj výskumných pracovníkov, kariéry.

Pokračujúci profesionálny rozvoj

Výskumníci vo všetkých štádiách kariéry by sa mali snažiť neustále zlepšovať prostredníctvom pravidelnej aktualizácie a rozširovania svojich zručností a kompetencií. To sa môže dosiahnuť rôznymi spôsobmi vrátane, ale nie výlučne, formálneho školenia, workshopov, konferencií a e-vzdelávania.

 

 

2. Pravidlá vzťahujúce sa na zamestnávateľov a investorov

Uznanie profesie

Všetci vedci zaoberajúci sa výskumnou kariérou by mali byť uznaní za profesionálov a malo by sa s nimi tak aj zaobchádzať. Malo by sa tak začať už hneď na začiatku ich kariéry, a to na úrovni postgraduálneho štúdia, a mali by zahŕňať všetky úrovne bez ohľadu na ich klasifikáciu na národnej úrovni (napr. Zamestnanec, postgraduálny študent, doktorand, postdoktorand, štátni zamestnanci).

Výskumné prostredie

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financovatelia výskumných pracovníkov by mali zabezpečiť, aby sa vytvorilo stimulujúce prostredie výskumu alebo odbornej prípravy v oblasti výskumu, ktoré ponúka vhodné vybavenie, zariadenia a príležitosti vrátane spolupráce na diaľku prostredníctvom výskumných sietí a že vnútroštátne alebo odvetvové nariadenia týkajúce sa zdravia a bezpečnosti vo výskume sú dodržané. Investori by mali zabezpečiť poskytnutie primeraných zdrojov na podporu dohodnutého pracovného programu.

Pracovné podmienky

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financujúce organizácie by mali zabezpečiť, aby pracovné podmienky pre výskumných pracovníkov vrátane výskumných pracovníkov so zdravotným postihnutím v prípade potreby poskytli pružnosť považovanú za nevyhnutnú pre úspešné výsledky výskumu v súlade s existujúcimi vnútroštátnymi právnymi predpismi a s vnútroštátnymi alebo odvetvovými dohodami o kolektívnom vyjednávaní. Mali by sa zameriavať na poskytovanie pracovných podmienok, ktoré umožnia ženám i mužom výskumných pracovníkov spojiť rodinu a prácu, deti a kariéru. Osobitná pozornosť by sa mala venovať okrem iného pružnej pracovnej dobe, práci na čiastočný úväzok, pracovnej dobe a pracovnému voľnu, ako aj potrebným finančným a administratívnym ustanoveniam upravujúcim takéto dojednania.

Stabilita a trvalosť zamestnania

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financujúce organizácie by mali zabezpečiť, aby výkon výskumných pracovníkov nebol narušený nestabilitou pracovných zmlúv, a preto by sa mali čo najviac zaviazať k zlepšeniu stability podmienok zamestnávania výskumných pracovníkov, a tým uplatňovať a dodržiavať zásady a podmienky ustanovené v smernici EÚ o práci na dobu určitú.

Financovanie a platy

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financovatelia výskumných pracovníkov by mali zabezpečiť, aby výskumní pracovníci využívali spravodlivé a atraktívne podmienky financovania a / alebo platy s primeranými a spravodlivými ustanoveniami o sociálnom zabezpečení (vrátane nemocenských a rodičovských dávok, dôchodkových práv a dávok v nezamestnanosti) v súlade s platnými vnútroštátnymi právnymi predpismi as vnútroštátne alebo odvetvové dohody o kolektívnom vyjednávaní. Musí to zahŕňať výskumných pracovníkov vo všetkých fázach kariéry, vrátane výskumných pracovníkov na začiatku štádia, zodpovedajúcich ich právnemu postaveniu, výkonnosti a úrovni kvalifikácie a / alebo zodpovednosti.

To by sa malo dosiahnuť na základe politiky rovnosti príležitostí pri nábore a následných kariérnych stupňoch bez toho, aby mali prednosť pred kvalitatívnymi a kompetentnými kritériami. Na zabezpečenie rovnakého zaobchádzania by výberové a hodnotiace výbory mali mať primeranú rodovú rovnováhu.

Rozvoj kariéry

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financovatelia výskumných pracovníkov by mali v rámci svojho riadenia ľudských zdrojov vypracovať osobitnú stratégiu kariérneho rastu pre výskumných pracovníkov vo všetkých fázach svojej kariéry bez ohľadu na ich zmluvnú situáciu vrátane výskumných pracovníkov na dobu určitú. Mala by zahŕňať aj dostupnosť mentorov, ktorí sa podieľajú na poskytovaní podpory a usmernení pre osobný a profesionálny rozvoj výskumných pracovníkov, čím ich motivujú a prispievajú k znižovaniu akejkoľvek bezpečnosti v ich profesionálnej budúcnosti. Všetci vedci by mali byť oboznámení s týmito ustanoveniami a opatreniami.

Hodnota mobility

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo poskytovatelia finančných prostriedkov musia uznať hodnotu geografickej, medzisektorovej, interdisciplinárnej a transdisciplinárnej a virtuálnej mobility, ako aj mobilitu medzi verejným a súkromným sektorom ako dôležitý prostriedok na posilnenie vedeckých poznatkov a profesionálneho rozvoja v ktoromkoľvek štádiu výskumu kariéry. Preto by mali tieto možnosti stavať do špecifickej stratégie kariérneho rastu a plne oceňovať a uznávať akékoľvek skúsenosti s mobilitou v rámci svojho systému kariérneho postupu / hodnotenia. Takéto opatrenia by sa mali pravidelne hodnotiť z hľadiska ich dostupnosti, využitia a účinnosti pri zlepšovaní kompetencií, zručností a zamestnateľnosti.

Prístup ku kariérovému poradenstvu

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo poskytovatelia finančných prostriedkov by mali zabezpečiť, aby sa kariérové poradenstvo a pomoc pri umiestňovaní pracovných miest buď v príslušných inštitúciách, alebo prostredníctvom spolupráce s inými štruktúrami ponúkali výskumníkom vo všetkých fázach ich kariéry bez ohľadu na ich zmluvnú situáciu.
Práva duševného vlastníctva
Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financujúce organizácie by mali zabezpečiť, aby výskumníci vo všetkých štádiách kariéry využívali výhody ich výsledkov výskumu a vývoja (ak nejaké) prostredníctvom právnej ochrany a najmä prostredníctvom vhodnej ochrany práv duševného vlastníctva vrátane autorských práv. Politiky a postupy by mali špecifikovať, aké práva patria výskumným pracovníom a / alebo prípadne ich zamestnávateľom alebo iným stranám, vrátane externých obchodných alebo priemyselných organizácií, ako to prípadne vyplýva zo špecifických dohôd o spolupráci alebo iných typov dohôd.

Spoluautorstvo

Spoluautorstvo by mali inštitúcie hodnotiť pozitívne pri hodnotení zamestnancov ako dôkaz konštruktívneho prístupu k vykonávaniu výskumu. Zamestnávatelia a / alebo poskytovatelia finančných prostriedkov by preto mali vypracovať stratégie, postupy a procesy, ktoré poskytnú výskumným pracovníkom vrátane výskumníkov na začiatku ich výskumnej kariéry potrebné rámcové podmienky, aby mohli využívať právo byť uznaní a vymenovaní a / alebo citovaní v kontextu ich skutočných príspevkov ako spoluautorov dokumentov, patentov atď., alebo publikovať svoje vlastné výsledky výskumu nezávisle od svojich nadriadených.
Dozor
Zamestnávatelia a / alebo poskytovatelia finančných prostriedkov by mali zabezpečiť, aby osoba bola jasne identifikovaná, na koho sa výskumní pracovníci v ranom štádiu môžu odvolávať na plnenie svojich pracovných povinností, a mali by o tom informovať výskumných pracovníkov. Takéto opatrenia by mali zabezpečiť, že navrhované orgány dohľadu sú dostatočne odborne zdatné v oblasti dohľadu nad výskumom, majú čas, vedomosti, skúsenosti, odborné znalosti a odhodlanie poskytnúť výskumnému stážistovi primeranú podporu a zabezpečiť potrebné postupy pokroku a preskúmania, ako aj potrebné mechanizmy spätnej väzby.
Výučba
Výučba je základným prostriedkom na štruktúrovanie a disemináciu, a preto by sa mala považovať za hodnotnú voľbu v rámci kariérneho postupu výskumných pracovníkov. Povinnosti v oblasti výučby by však nemali byť neprimerané a nemali by zabraňovať výskumným pracovníkom, najmä na začiatku ich kariéry, pri vykonávaní svojich výskumných činností. Zamestnávatelia a / alebo poskytovatelia finančných prostriedkov by mali zaviesť pre všetkých výskumníkov, vrátane vysokoškolských výskumných pracovníkov, systémy hodnotenia / hodnotenia na pravidelné a transparentné hodnotenie ich odbornej výkonnosti nezávislým (a v prípade vedúcich výskumných pracovníkov, prednostne medzinárodný) výbor. Takéto postupy ocenenia a hodnotenia by mali náležite zohľadňovať celkovú výskumnú kreativitu a výsledky výskumu, napr. publikácií, patentov, riadenia výskumu, výučby / prednášok, dohľadu, mentoringu, národnej alebo medzinárodnej spolupráce, administratívnych povinností, činností zameraných na informovanie verejnosti a mobility a mali by sa brať do úvahy v súvislosti s kariérnym postupom.

Sťažnosti / odvolania

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financujúce organizácie výskumných pracovníkov by mali v súlade s vnútroštátnymi predpismi a nariadeniami zaviesť vhodné postupy, pravdepodobne vo forme nestrannej (ombudsmanovej) osoby, ktorá by riešila sťažnosti / odvolania výskumných pracovníkov vrátane tých, ktoré sa týkajú konfliktov medzi školiteľmi a výskumníkmi v rannom štádiu. Takéto postupy by mali poskytovať všetkým výskumným pracovníkom dôvernú a neformálnu pomoc pri riešení konfliktov, sporov a sťažností súvisiacich s prácou s cieľom podporiť čestné a spravodlivé zaobchádzanie v rámci inštitúcie a zlepšiť celkovú kvalitu pracovného prostredia.

Účasť v rozhodovacích orgánoch

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financovatelia výskumných pracovníkov by ju mali považovať za úplne legitímnu a naozaj žiaducu, aby boli výskumní pracovníci zastúpení v príslušných informačných, konzultačných a rozhodovacích orgánoch inštitúcií, pre ktoré pracujú, aby chránili a podporovali ich individuálne a kolektívne záujmy ako profesionáli a aktívne prispievali k fungovaniu inštitúcie.

Nábor pracovníkov

Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financujúce organizácie by mali zabezpečiť, aby boli jasne špecifikované vstupné a prijímacie štandardy pre výskumných pracovníkov, najmä na začiatku ich kariéry, a aby takisto uľahčili prístup znevýhodneným skupinám alebo výskumným pracovníkom, ktorí sa vrátili do výskumnej kariéry vrátane učiteľov akejkoľvek úrovni) vrátiť sa k výskumnej kariére. Zamestnávatelia a / alebo financovatelia výskumných pracovníkov by mali pri vymenúvaní alebo prijímaní výskumných pracovníkov dodržiavať zásady stanovené v Kódexe správania pre nábor výskumných pracovníkov.

Slovenská republika dlhodobo zaostáva za ostatnými krajinami v zapájaní sa do aktivít európskeho výskumného priestoru (ERA), a to najmä do projektov rámcových programov EÚ. Nedostatočná medzinárodná spolupráca má negatívny vplyv na kvalitu národného výskumu. Za tento nelichotivý stav môže viacero faktorov. Medzi najhlavnejšie však patria výška výdajov na výskum a vývoj (porovnanie SR s členskými krajinami EÚ a v rámci OECD) a kvalita vzdelávacieho systému.

 

Centrum vedecko-technických informácií SR sa rozhodlo podporiť medzinárodnú spoluprácu okrem iného aj prostredníctvom vytvorenia siete slovenských výskumníkov pôsobiacich v zahraničí. V rámci projektu SK4ERA je pripravená séria nástrojov, ktoré by mali uľahčiť interakciu s prostredím vedy a inovácií na Slovensku. Využívanie týchto nástrojov zlepší spoluprácu medzi inštitúciami a výskumníkmi v zahraničí.

 

Pilotnou aktivitou je v tomto smere špecializovaná mentoringová schéma SK4ERA, ktorá má zvýšiť účasť Slovenska v rámcovom programe Horizont 2020/ Horizont Európa. Na ňu teraz nadväzujeme vytvorením registra vedcov pôsobiacich v zahraničí - Alumni, ktorý môže poslúžiť aj ako zdroj kontaktov pre honorovaný mentoring riešiteľov projektov. Zároveň sa tak vytvorí databáza potenciálnych rečníkov na podujatiach v Slovenskej republike a v zahraničí, z ktorého budú môcť čerpať ostatné verejné výskumné inštitúcie, univerzity i odborná verejnosť. Hlavným cieľom ALUMNI DATABÁZY, ktorá zoskupuje slovenských vedcov pôsobiacich v zahraničí, je zvýšiť účasť Slovenska v projektoch medzinárodnej spolupráce.

Prečo si myslíte, že Alumni databáza je dôležitá?

 

V.K.: Som bioinformatička, na Slovensku som nikdy neštudovala ani nepracovala. Bioinformatika je bežne vyučovaná na univerzitách v USA od 90. rokov, u nás je ešte stále v plienkach a nie je možné v nej obdržať Mgr., ani PhD, titul. Tzv. big data nám umožňujú učiť sa z minulosti a predikovať budúcnosť, vyriešiť podstatu mnohých ochorení a vystavať podklady pre wet-lab biológov na riešenie hlavných otázok mnohých projektov. Prostredníctvom databázy Alumni som ochotná zdieľať svoje vedomosti a nadväzovať nové profesijné známosti, ako i uvažovať nad spoločným projektom.

L.B.: Databáza Alumni je výborný nápad ako rozšíriť povedomie o vedkyniach a vedcoch pôsobiacich mimo SR a ako zvýšiť ich spoluprácu s domácimi kolegami. Na viacerých univerzitách v zahraničí podobný nástroj bežne funguje. Kontakty z databázy sú využívané na mentoring, couching a na získavanie informácii o akademických podmienkach v prípade záujmu práce/ štúdia na danej univerzite. Osobne si myslím, že je žiadúce a ukáže sa byť prospešné, vytvoriť jednu spoločnú sieť kontaktov aj na Slovenku.

J.L.: V zahraničí žije podľa oficiálnych údajov 300000 Slovákov. Nemáme vôbec predstavu, akú časť predstavujú slovenskí vedci, ktorí vycestovali zo Slovenska za účelom získavania skúsenosti v medzinárodných tímoch. Alumni databáza môže výrazne pomôcť pri získavaní týchto informácii. My vedci často chodíme na konferencie, workshopy a stáže do miest, kde sme nikdy predtým neboli a nikoho tam nepoznáme. Je preto vždy prijemné zistiť, že tam budú aj iní Slováci a len tak sa nezáväzne stretnúť a porozprávať.

 

Je podľa vás mentoring užitočný?

 

L.B.:  Aktívna účasť na mentoringu by mala byť v dnešnej dobe bežnou praxou pre vedcov aj študentov. Ja osobne som ako študentka veľakrát tápala v tom, na koho sa môžem obrátiť a požiadať o pomoc alebo nejakú radu. Počas môjho pôsobenia v Štokholme a neskôr aj v Dubline som sa zúčastnila niekoľkých kariérne zameraných workshopov a vždy som sa stretla s ľuďmi ochotnými so mnou otvorene diskutovať, čo mi pomohlo v mojich ďalších rozhodnutiach.

V.K.: Mentoring som absolvovala v Nemecku v roku 2017. Moja mentorka bola prof. Jane Parker z Inštitútu Maxa Plancka pre výskum šľachtenia rastlín v Kolíne nad Rýnom. Bolo to skvelé. Načerpala som množstvo inšpirácie, prenieslo sa na mňa kvantum entuziazmu od špičkovej vedkyne a dostala som množstvo rád. V rámci všeobecnej časti som sa dozvedela o kultúrnych a povahových rozdieloch rozmanitého spektra spolupracovníkov, príznakoch depresie a clivosti po domove, kariérnych možnostiach a ako balansovať pracovný a osobný život. Veľmi užitočný bol aj „couching“ od lektoriek špecializujúcich sa na body-language, prácu s hlasom, ako prednášať na medzinárodných konferenciách, ako písať granty, ako povedať NIE a ako vyjednávať počas rokovaní o pracovnej zmluve.

J.L.: Mentoring je podľa mňa v dnešnej dobe dôležitý v každej profesii, ale pre vedcov je to nevyhnutnosť. Ja som sa osobne zúčastnila na niekoľkých kurzoch ohľadne písania grantových žiadostí, prezentácie vedeckých výsledkov, vystupovania a komunikácie. Naučila som sa, že nielen obsah, ale aj forma musia byt na top úrovni. Ak sa podobne podujatia začnú vo veľkom organizovať aj na Slovensku, budú mat šancu sa posunúť ďalej nielen jednotlivci, ale cela slovenská veda.

headed by Ivan Matic at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing
is looking for a full time

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m/f/d) (job code 01-2021)

 

We are interested in revealing the molecular secrets of ADP-ribosylation (ADPr), a challenging PTM that plays key roles in health and disease. Using advanced proteomics, we uncovered Serine ADPr as a new type of histone mark (Nature Chemical Biology 2016) and described the underlying molecular mechanisms by identifying HPF1/PAPR1 as its reader complex (Mol Cell 2017) and ARH3 as its eraser (eLife 2017). Crucially, we and others have shown that Ser-ADPr is the primary form of ADPr in the DNA damage response (eLife 2018). These insights are stimulating studies of how Ser-ADPr regulates the DNA damage response and chromatin dynamics, as exemplified by our recent report on the interplay between Ser-ADPr and canonical histone marks (Cell Reports 2018). Recently we established a chemical biology strategy that is based on the Ser-ADPr writer complex and allows the generation of a range of essential tools for ADPr. This novel technology has broad potential to illuminate ADPr signalling pathways in essential biological processes and has allowed us to elucidate the prevalence of mono-ADPr upon DNA damage (Cell 2020).

Currently with the support of an ERC consolidator grant we are capitalizing on our lead and combining our newly established chemical biology-based technology with state-of-the-art proteomics, biochemistry, molecular biology and microscopy techniques to study elusive, but biologically and clinically important forms of ADPr in the DNA damage response, chromatin dynamics and ageing.

We seek an ambitious and talented scientist to join an enthusiastic, fast-paced and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment.

Qualifications

The applicant is required to hold a Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field, and have a strong track record of accomplishments and relevant experience demonstrated by first author publication(s) in high-profile journals. Candidates with a strong interest in PTMs and signaling and with a high level of competence in cell biology and/or biochemistry are encouraged to apply for this position. Qualifications

You have (or will receive in near future) a PhD degree in physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, or a closely related subject. You enjoy performing experiments and analysis to stepwise build a deeper understanding of complex physical mechanisms. Experience in one or more of the involved topics (high-harmonic generation, ultrafast lasers and optics, vacuum instrumentation, attosecond and femtosecond science, EUV and X-Ray spectroscopy and scattering), in particular experimentally but also theoretically, is required.

Very good verbal and written communications skills (in English) are required.

Terms of employment

A postdoc position is intended as full-time appointment in the service of VU University Amsterdam for the duration of 2 years (initially 12 months and - after positive evaluation - extended to two years). The postdoc salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on the experience.

The aluminum (Al) - air battery is considered to be an attractive candidate as a power source for electric vehicles because of its high theoretical energy density. However, some technical and scientific problems preventing the large-scale development of Al - air batteries are to be resolved. Al - air battery chemistries are facing a series of problems such as the corrosion of Al anode, high self-discharge rate, sluggish discharge kinetics, lack of rechargeability, and short shelf life. The aim of a postdoc candidate is to address the abovementioned challenges by developing of a unique Al anode produced by powder metallurgy approach. This will require a good understanding of the relationship between the anode`s microstructure and performance. The main task of the postdoc will be electro-chemical analyses including galvanostatic testing, impedance spectrometry, measurement of polarization curves, etc. Other duties involve coordination of analyses, exploitation and synthesis of results, organization of follow-up meetings, oral presentations, writing of reports and scientific articles. The postdoc will closely collaborate with other postdoc team member, who`s been focused more towards processing issues in terms of Al - air batteries.

Brief introduction to the research topic:

Soil temperature is an important parameter to keep the ecological balance on this earth. It plays vital role in various biological processes which affect fertility and productivity of the soil. Therefore, understanding of soil temperature variation induced by climate change is very essential for managing agricultural production in an area. During last few years, soil temperature in the agricultural land on Nitra river basin in Slovakia has been found to be considerably affected due to the climate change. As a result, the crop growth on this basin area has also been significantly affected. In such situation, the numerical study of temperature variation in agricultural soil using any efficient tool needs to be conducted for finding the plausible solutions to this problem. Further numerical investigation might be carried out for modelling of water uptake, hydraulic redistribution and fertilizer induced contaminant transport in the agricultural soil.

Objective of the research project:

The main objective of this postdoctoral research work is to numerically investigate the climate change impact on the variation of soil temperature affecting the fertility and agricultural productivity of Nitra river basin in Slovakia.

Research methodology:

Apart from the academic expertise, the candidate may require good knowledge to carry out numerical simulations of heat transport in the software tools like HYDRUS 2D or VADOSE/W for this postdoctoral research study. The hiring university has very well equipped laboratories and other useful resources may be needed by the candidate for the postdoctoral research study. However, if necessary the experimental laboratory and field setup may be developed by the university to be used by the candidate.

Necessity of the Research project:

Agricultural production provides the necessary foods which should be sufficiently available for the growth and development of human body. The agricultural crop production of a land depends upon its fertility which is the function of soil temperature. Hence, this postdoctoral research project finds its necessity to explore the future potential based on the numerical study which may show the risk to maintain the suitable range of soil temperature so as to be alert in advance for avoiding the deficiency in agricultural production. In addition, this project outputs may be helpful to find some sustainable measures for maintaining suitable range of soil temperature in the agricultural land for the survival of plants and trees in the area of research study.

Description of the professional content of the postdoctoral post:

Primary task of the postdoctoral position will include:

  1. Collection of required field data:
  • Sampling of soil for evaluating useful soil hydraulic properties
  • Measurement of soil temperature using electronic device
  • Measurement of daily weather parameters using suitable equipment
  • Sampling of plants for determining various parameters to know crop yields
  1. Collection of past and futuristic climate data
  • Collecting past climate data measured by Slovak Hydrometeorolgical Institute
  • Forecasting of futuristic climate data based on Statistical Downscale Model
  1. Numerical modelling of soil temperature variation
  • Simulation of temporal variation of soil temperature using appropriate tools such as HYDRUS 2D or VADOSE/W
  • Exploring the future potential if there is any risk to maintain the suitable range of soil temperature
  • Identification of sites (in GIS environment) with susceptibility to excessive drying in the model river basin

Required proficiency of the postdoctoral candidate should include the skills and experiences in the above mentioned tasks of the postdoctoral research study.

Required Knowledge of the applicant:

Applications are invited for a fully funded full-time PhD studentship to conduct research in Electric Power Systems for future Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft.

With the general trend towards more sustainable, environmentally friendly transportation, future aircrafts will become significantly electrified, shifting the balance between different types of energy used by onboard systems towards greener and more efficient electrical one. This trend, known as More-Electric Aircraft (MEA), leads to a significant increase of electric power demand onboard and makes the electric power system (EPS) the backbone of future aircraft. Looking ahead, further and even more radical increase in airborne electric energy usage, above few MW level for regional aircraft, is expected from partial or even full electrification of propulsive power within the next generation of MEA technology (hybrid-electric and full-electric). Such a substantial increase of power level requires reconsideration of many EPS principles in order to guarantee safe and reliable flight.

In this PhD project, the successful candidate will investigate potential EPS architectures suitable for implementation in a hybrid-electric regional aircraft. The project will start with the analysis of state-of-the-art and identifying potential solutions, innovative ideas for potential exploitation in onboard EPS, and associated technological challenges. Based on these, potential architectural solutions will be proposed. Through intensive modelling, the proposed EPS paradigms are to be investigated in order to identify the most promising solutions that meet a set of predefined criteria. The developed models should be able to integrate all the main EPS components foreseen to be commercially available and certified within next 10-15 years, including sources of electric power (conventional and unconventional), power electronic conversions, power distribution and protections, energy storages, typical loads (e.g., propulsion drives, actuators, environmental controls), and overall EPS control logic. The models will need to be representative of key electrical performances, but also will include other domains such as efficiency, weight, power density, volume etc. Based on these models, the proof of proposed EPS concept will be derived, and the key power requirements, achievable steady-state and transient performances, power quality and stability conditions will be demonstrated. Finally, the models will need to be integrated into a Digital Twin platform for overall assessment of future aircraft under development.

The candidate will develop a wide range of knowledge and skills in the fast-developing area of airborne electric power systems, which will be widely applicable to the candidate future career. This project is a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the Leonardo Company, the lead regional aircraft developer and manufacturer, therefore the candidate will have a distinctive opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies within unique academia-industry research environment.

The student will work with an interdisciplinary supervisory team with expertise in 3D printing, materials chemistry and biocatalysis.

Project title: 3D Printing of proteins for continuous flow biocatalysis and bio-adsorption

We seek to use 3D printing for tailored support materials with applications in biocatalytic continuous flow reactors and in the selective adsorption of biomolecules. The high geometrical freedom and precise control of 3D printing allows the creation of complex structures with high surface area. This is key to the effectiveness of solid supports, either in immobilised enzyme reactors or in biosorption materials, where the mass transfer of the substrate to the active site (catalytic or adsorption site) depends on flow properties and on the geometry of the support. The ability to quickly generate new designs will allow us to iterate quickly to find the optimal structure for high yield and efficiency, whilst the high fidelity of the 3D printing process will allow scale up with high fidelity. 

In this project, the optimum design of the support polymer geometry will be developed for maximum efficiency in catalysis / adsorption. The encapsulation of enzymes within 3D printed hydrogels will be optimised with a range of oligomers/polymers, polymerisation initiators and additives. The requirements for these printable materials will be a high protein loading capacity, good chemical compatibilities between components and favourable diffusion properties. A suitable 3D printing process will be optimised in order to allow printing of mechanically stable structures with the smallest features in a few microns range. A set of proteins and enzymes will be tested to ensure applicability of the approach to a range of biocatalytic transformations and adsorption-based separations.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge in chemistry, materials science, materials engineering or related subjects and be interested in experimental catalysis, polymer chemistry and 3D printing. The studentship is an exciting research collaboration between supervisors based within the Centre for Additive Manufacturing (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/cfam) and the Sustainable Process Technologies Research Group (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/sustainable-process-technologies-research-group/index.aspx). In humans, the cysteine-containing tripeptide glutathione (GSH) is an essential thiol cofactor that maintains an intracellular reducing environment to protect against oxidative stress, which causes lipid, protein & DNA damage.

Glutathione biosynthesis is limited by the availability of cysteine. In diabetics, hyperglycaemia causes long-term health complications, because elevated levels of glycolytic intermediates (dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (GAP)) causing oxidative stress, which depletes intracellular glutathione and cysteine. This reduces the rate of glutathione biosynthesis, which explains why the glutathione levels are lower. However, nobody has ever established how and why the cysteine 

levels are reduced. We have recently discovered that cysteine can be chemically trapped by reaction with DHAP and GAP to form thiohemiacetals.

This project will characterise these reactions in detail (both in solution and in cells). Proving and understanding these biochemical reactions in vivo will fill a substantial gap in our knowledge of cellular biochemistry in diabetics. It will underpin future development of cysteine rich diets as a way to lower the long term health complications caused by hyperglycaemia in diabetics It will also establish the existence of an alternative intracellular reservoir for cysteine which could be of relevance across all living organisms.

The project offers extensive interdisciplinary training and research experience in analytical biochemistry, enzymology, whole cell NMR spectroscopy and cell biology. This will involve working within different research groups within the School of Pharmacy and The School of Biology.

The project is suited for a student with a degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical or Biological Sciences or a related discipline.

An earlier start date of 1 February or 1 June 2022 may be possible, but this should be discussed with the primary supervisor in the first instance

PhD scholarship (4 years) on muon tomography

The center for Cosmology, Particle Physics and Phenomenology (CP3) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) invites applications for one position aimed to obtain a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, funded for four years.

The research project, under the primary supervision of Andrea Giammanco, will be in the area of "muon tomography", or "muography", i.e. an imaging method that exploits the large natural flux of muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere. This project will also overlap with the research goals of the MODE consortium (see webpage and this brief article), i.e. automatic optimization of the design of experiments.
The selected candidate will receive full funding through the H2020-RIA project "SilentBorder" funded by the European Commission. The aim of "SilentBorder" is to design new scanners and/or propose new methods, based on the principles of muography, for the detection of illicit materials in specific case studies where traditional scanning methods are inadequate or insufficient. The main research task of the selected candidate will be to develop a fast, general and flexible simulation framework for muon tomography (applicable also outside of the SilentBorder research goals) in synergy with the rest of the CP3-muography team and other teams belonging to SilentBorder and with support from MODE experts in differentiable programming; and to apply such framework for the optimization of the design of muon tomography scanners.
This work is expected to lead to academic publications and presentations at international conferences, with the selected candidate as leading author or coauthor depending on the contribution. The skills and competences acquired during this work are expected to enhance the career prospects both in academia and the private sector.
There are no teaching duties in this position.

This PhD position is part of the “MOIRA” (MOnItoRing of large scale complex technologicAl systems) project, funded by the European Commission through the H2020 “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks” program.

Modern technological systems increase in scale and are becoming more and more complex and sophisticated. Parallel, the revolution in electronics, digital technology and communications have drastically modified and expanded the physical diversity, scope, processing capabilities and complexity of the monitoring equipment and infrastructure used. Millions of networked sensors are being embedded in the physical world sensing, creating and communicating data. The amount of data available for capturing has been exploding and the era of Big Data is already here, as the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a reality. The main question which arises is how, following which steps and with which tools the data can be transformed to information and knowledge.

The objectives of MOIRA are

  • the development of novel signal processing tools for the monitoring of industrial processes based on machine learning methods applied on heterogeneous time series,
  • the application of data mining technologies for the estimation of Key Performance Indicators which determine the operational profit,
  • the conception, development and validation of methodologies for automated monitoring of cyber physical system fleets,
  • The multi sensor machine condition monitoring under variable operating conditions.

Within the context of the MOIRA project, the PhD student will work on the analysis, identification and modelling of vibratory and acoustic sources of aircraft engines. Vibratory and acoustic sources include random phenomena related to fuel combustion, cyclic phenomena related to the rotations of shafts/rotors and nonlinear phenomena related to the fluidic link between the high-pressure and the low-pressure turbines. The digital industrial evolution is characterized by an interconnection of machines and systems (objects) that is mainly based on the use of many sensors that collect information, but with a degraded quality related to the nature of the “general public” sensors they are equipped with. ESR15 will study how the health condition of aircraft engines can be analysed in real time using this type of generally low-quality sensor and establish a diagnosis that will anticipate and optimize the maintenance. The work will rely on baseline data collected on board during a flight from the specialized monitoring equipment and on data captured by common smartphones/tablets during actual flights.

The captured data will be firstly structured and ESR15 will work towards the correlation of the different sources and the development and application of novel high-level signal-processing tools in order to extract the diagnostic information hidden in the sound-and-vibration signals collected by common smartphones/tablets (low-quality sensors). The statistical properties of the captured signals will be exploited to characterize the sources and provide indicators of the motor’s health. Moreover, the ESR will develop a model for predictive maintenance exploiting additional information collected on the ground and during the planned maintenance. To achieve this, four principal tasks are required

  • Task 1: In general, the data acquired from real-world machine are subject to some errors or censoring, which harden their subsequent use and processing. Typical examples may include sensor defects, partial loss in the data or some erroneous measurements caused by environmental factors. To address this issue, the first tasks focuses on structuring, pre-processing, cleaning and visualising the database while conserving useful information.
  • Task 2: As the amount of data to be treated is large, the access to relevant information is like looking for a needle in a haystack. This naturally calls for advanced statistical and signal processing techniques to construct a meaningful and low-dimensional feature space. This provides useful patterns allowing straightforward selection of suspicious data.
  • Task 3: Signals captured from rotating machines are known to have specific spectral patterns often modelled through physical or phenomenological models. These models offer an understanding of the baseline (healthy) state as well as potential faults on various organs. Faults are generally identified through their specific signature that departs from the baseline. This task consists in exploiting the available data to construct a model for different states of the system. An interesting way to explore is to construct a spectral cartography of the machine comprising the main and the most influencing components.
  • Task 4: This task consists in constructing condition indicators to monitor the health state of the machine, detect potential faults and identify the faulty components. Those indicators will be constructed based on physical and data-driven approaches. A decision scheme will be then elaborated to establish an accurate diagnosis of the monitored system

Metabolic Host-Pathogen Interactions:

Revealing how Intracellular Bacteria hijack Mitochondrial OXPHOS during Infection

A postdoc position is available at the Biology of Intracellular Bacteria Unit (BBI) at Institut Pasteur, headed by Prof. Carmen Buchrieser (https://research.pasteur.fr/en/team/biology-of-intracellular-bacteria/). The BBI Unit investigates and characterizes the molecular, genetic and cellular basis of the infection by intracellular bacteria. We have recently shown that the intracellular bacterium Legionella pneumophila, which causes Legionaries’ disease in humans, alters mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and ATP production during infection of human macrophages. Now we aim to understand the mechanism(s) by which L. pneumophila and other intracellular bacteria such as Salmonella enterica ser. Typhimurium hijack the mitochondrial OXPHOS machinery of infected macrophages.

The position will be funded for 3 years through an ANR JCJC grant awarded to Dr. Pedro Escoll, and would start at an agreed time between February and December 2022. By combining state-of-the-art image-based methods with bacterial genetics, si-RNA silencing, proteomics, and cellular biology approaches, the selected candidate would identify new mechanisms pathogenic bacteria employ to subvert mitochondrial functions in infected human macrophages.

We seek for a highly motivated and creative post-doc having an optimistic personality and excellent skills in cell biology and imaging. Knowledge in cell culture of human primary cells and basics in bacteriology will be welcomed. Impact of turbulent transport on W accumulation and fusion performance in the central part of ITER plasmas

Fusion energy promises high-energy-density baseload electricity and heat production with essentially limitless fuel reserves, inherent nuclear safety, and negligible impact on the environment. With the construction of ITER, we are entering a new phase where fusion experiments aim for net power gain. This challenging goal requires to avoid excessive radiative losses associated with high Z impurity accumulation in the confined plasma and to maximize the density and temperature of the main ions for increased fusion performance. A very recent numerical study revealed that pressure-driven instabilities known as Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBM) are destabilized in the central region of high-performance JET plasmas and drive a subsequent level of heat and particle transport [N. Kumar et al., Nucl. Fusion 61, 036005 (2021)]. Preliminary gyrokinetic stability calculations indicate that the central part of ITER conventional H-mode scenarios is also prone to KBM destabilization. The goal of this PhD is to study the implications of core turbulent transport, including transport driven by KBM turbulence, on core W accumulation in ITER, and mechanisms for its control. The problem will be addressed with state-of-the-art non-linear gyrokinetic simulations complemented with tokamak simulations relying on reduced transport models. The thesis will be jointly supervised by A. Loarte from ITER Organisation, C. Bourdelle from CEA Cadarache and Y. Camenen from Aix-Marseille University.

Pellet-Cladding Interaction (PCI) in a Light Water Reactor is one of the major concerns to guarantee fuel rod clad integrity of PWR nuclear reactor during operations needed to follow power grid demand. In order to forbid operations leading to clad failure, modeling capability to simulate the mechanism has improved through the years. And, Codes need more and more detailed and precise experimental data. Until now, those data result from dedicated irradiation programs, named “power ramp tests”, carried out in experimental devices in Material Testing Reactors, ISABELLE in OSIRIS in the past and the future ADELINE in the Jules Horowitz Reactor JHR.

There is currently no instrumentation for online PCI detection required for full validation of the modeling scheme.

A previous work has shown that it is possible to measure, under specific conditions, the effects of PCI on the vibrations of a nuclear fuel rod subjected to axial excitation of turbulent flow under external conditions. The objective of this PhD thesis will then be to develop a general process, including the three aspects, modelling, measurement and data processing, in order to improve existing methods capable of providing precise information on the mechanical interactions of the components of a complex structure in a very constrained context (limited space for instrumentation, high temperatures, irradiation, etc.).
